Decisions, Decisions

Homeschooling's extreme freedom comes with the fact that you do not necessarily have authority figures to give you insights and directions. No worries, though. We have compiled a number of handy sites and sources that have information and answers we think you'll find handy.

Go on, take a look.

On Boards

While there are a number of boards operating in India, two are practical for homeschoolers: The Cambridge International Board and the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) board.

The Cambridge Board

The Cambridge board is recognized internationally. It is very well-rounded in preparing a student in elements like independent thinking, application and understanding new and familiar situations alike, handling and evaluating different types of information sources, thinking logically and presenting coherent arguments, making judgments, explaining with reason, understanding implications, and communicating them logically and clearly. It has in-depth subject content. The board offers 55 subject varieties, and schools are free to offer them in any combination. The students are free to take up any variation and build a curriculum cocktail of their liking. This enables students to specialize in subjects that attract them. The equivalent of a typical school’s 11th and 12th grades are the Cambridge AS level and the Cambridge A levels, respectively. Normally, the AS level is a one-year course and the A level a two-year course with the AS level covering half of the A level’s content.

The subjects offered can be found here.

For India itself, the Cambridge International Board has an examination series that takes place in the months of February and March. This happens in order to satisfy Indian institutions' requirements.

NIOS Board

The NIOS board holds examinations for students in the secondary and senior secondary programs that are similar to CBSE and CISCE. Their main objective is to increase literacy, pro flexible learning and provide education especially in the rural areas. Vocational courses are possible after high school. It collaborates with the c]Commonwealth of Learning and UNESCO. There are various study centers for Indian expatriates in many foreign countries. The examinations are held twice a year in April-May and October-November. Homeschoolers are required to register with the body a year before they want to sit for the examination. The certificates issued are recognized like other boards and are valid for taking competitive examinations. All the courses can be studied in Hindi and English, with certain courses in Urdu as well. The questions for the examination can be written in any Indian language, even though the questions asked are in Hindi/English/Urdu.
